Just as I was looking at old photographs, I happened to see this photo. Any senior citizen will remember banks of pay telephones everywhere. According to the New York Times, in the early 2000s, there were around 30,000 pay phones in New York City.
Now, there are four phone booths in Manhattan. A pay phone in New York’s Penn Station was the busiest in the country, racking up an average of 5,500 calls monthly. Hail, all new, pocket-sized cell phones.
