COVID-19 just zapped the Rockettes

Today, I read that the 2020 Rockettes’ Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall in New York City has been canceled. This is the first time in 87 years that the annual production won’t go on.

The show is a hallmark of the Holiday season in NYC and for me, each year I couldn’t wait to see the show again (my family doesn’t share my enthusiasm, by the way). The show changes slightly year over year, however, parts of the production, as the falling toy soldiers show, are always included.

One year I took my now-adult granddaughter to see the show. She was about 7 years old at the time; she loves the holidays and was thrilled to see the show for the first time. At one point in the show, there were scenes (with live camels) depicting the journey of Wise Men or the “Three Kings” to Bethlehem. With the music and narrative, this was powerful stuff.

At that point, I turned to my granddaughter and asked her if she knew the story, and what was happening in the depiction on stage. She looked at me and replied: “Yes, grandpa. I read the book.” Even today, I couldn’t improve on that comment; she was spot on.

Right now, I wish everyone in the world could turn to the Wise Men for guidance. We need it now more than ever before.
